Pilkington
Pilkington has been recognized as a world leader in glass
manufacturing for over 150 years. Constant innovation is backed
by sophisticated research and development.
The Pilkington Planar System
The Pilkington Planar structural glass system is the original
and still the leading structural glass system in the world.
Invented by Pilkington over 35 years ago, Pilkington Planar
systems provide a complete glass envelope for building structures,
satisfying the most demanding and creative architectural requirements.
Facades can be on any plane either vertical, horizontal or
multi angled.By combining Planar with the vertical range of
products available from Pilkington, one of the worlds largest
glass makers, superior system performance on both functional
and aesthetic levels can be achieved.
Essential to the highest level of quality represented by Planar
is the fact that Pilkington uses only its own float glass
to make structural systems. The thorough knowledge of their
own product assures needed tight controls on quality. Fabrication
quality is further assured by the fact that Planar is fabricated
in an ISO 9002 certified facility in St. Helens, U.K.
Research and Development
Planar has been designed, developed and accelerated life tested
by Pilkington Research and Development. The product is continually
subjected to ongoing testing, as new projects require higher
performance. Custom applications are researched, developed
and tested before they are allowed into service. One of Pilkingtons
numerous test systems, shown in the picture, subjects Planar
fittings to extreme performance tests to insure they meet
or exceed the customers performance specifications.

Independent test results on specific systems and performance,
i.e. for seismic requirements, are available on request. Testing
can be carried out by Pilkington Research and Development
or by an independent body, on request. Recently, for projects
in the United States, Pilkington and W&W Glass Systems have
successfully completed rigorous testing for the new Planetarium
enclosure at the American Museum of Natural History in New
York City, The Fox Canopy projects in Los Angeles and the
IBT-Segerstrom Building in Costa Mesa, CA. As show at right,
entire structures are erected and rigorously tested under
actual wind, water, seismic and other environmantal conditions.
Every application is designed using the criteria within the
Pilkington Code of Practice for Structural Glass Facades.
It is because of the extensive knowledge gained by Pilkington
that Pilkington can confidently offer the end used, through
its accredited dealer/installer W&W Glass Systems, a TWELVE
YEAR DESIGN AND MATERIALS WARRANTY...the strongest of any
warranty in this industry.
